Marriott’s little sister is 13- year-old Dede Lee. The two have been together since February. “We go out together every Saturday, and we both get pretty excited about it,”* said Marriott. Some of the activities the two have done together include visiting the Vancouver Aquarium, water- skiing, shopping and visiting the cinema. They're also planning to go horseback riding in the near future. Big Sisters’ North Shore counsellor Linda Proudfoot said Marriott and Lee are one of about 250 big sister relationships in the Lower Mainland, including 25 on the North Shore. She said volunteer women, be- tween the ages of 20 and 40, are eligible, and if they are parents, their children should be J3 years or older, She said volunteers are asked to * “HELL GROW." |} give five hours a week to the pro- gram for ai least one year. ‘*We’re trying to interest women to give us a thought when they’re considering doing volunteer work. It’s an opportunity to give some- thing back to the community, and to spend time with a younger child,”’ she said. Marriott said Big Sisters has given her a feeling of accomplish- ment, and she said talking with her little sister reminds her of the time when she was a teenager. Little <‘sters are between the ages of seven and 17, and although the majority are from single-parent families, some still live with both parents but feel they could benefit from the service. AH big sisters attend an infor- mation night, go through two 1%-hour training sessions, an ex- tensive interview with a Big Sister staff member and a police check.
