HOTELS:

If you arrive ia an Italian city
without a hotel reservation,
there is generally a central
reservations bureau in the
railway station. They'll find
you a hotel within your price
range with the features you
want — plumbing for exam-
ple. You pay them and get a
receipt. Be sure to ask them
what the approximate cab
fare should be to the hotel
and confirm it with the cab
driver before you get in the
cab,

Service charges (in other
words, ‘‘tips’’) are routinely
added to your hotel bill so
don’t go throwing money
around, But, if you're stay-
ing in one hotel for any
length of time, tip your
chambermaid early on and
you'll get extra soap, towels
and fresh sheets every day in-
stead of a re-run.

It’s a mistake to buy a
hotel meal package. Your
room will come with a con-
tinental breakfast bui they
try to shove the dinner on
you as well.

Don’t order anything from
room service. If you want a
drink in your room, bring
your own liquor and buy
chilled mix. If you send for
ice you'll get half a dozen
watery little cubes. Another
ploy is to go to the hotel bar
and ask for a big plastic cup-
ful of ice water.

FOOD:

Italian restaurants are
obliged. to offer a three-
course fixed-price tourist
menu. Order it oniy if you’ve
got the appetite of a quarter-
back. Every restaurant starts
‘with a: cover charge — you
-pay.for your table setting and
bread: Then, each thing you
order. is added and capped-
off with a-service charge of
about 15%.-: ‘That; oh. inno-
cent . tourist, is. the tip. —
don’t get suckered into leav-
ing an additional one.

Deli-type food outlets
abound — look for bars and
“Tavola Cauldas’”’. In some,
you look in the showcase and’
decide what you want to eat.

In others, you pay one
price if you take the food
outside to eat and a higher
price if you use their tables.

The menus — in four
languages — are always in
the window and may give you
a hint about dual pricing.
Also, watch what the other
diners are doing before you
jump in and make an idiot of
yourself,

TAXIS:

Try to stick to metered
cabs. If you can’t, confirm
the price of the ride before
you get in. If the driver
doesn’t speak English, show
him the address and ask,
‘Quanto costa questo?’’
Hand him a pen and paper so
you’ ll understand the answer.

There are surcharges for
extra passengers and bags.

Prayer is a healing art and
is recommended to all
passengers riding in Italian
cabs.
