Three cheers for Ed Press,
the B.C. Government
Employee from Dawson
Creek, who has refused to
swear an oath of allegiance
to England's Queen
Elizabeth.

This anachronistic oath
must be taken by all gov-
ernment employees from file
clerks up to deputy ministers
and Mr. Press faces
dismissal as a result of his
refusal tc go along with the
crowd,

Fortunately, the B.C,
Governinent Employees
Union and B.C. Civil Liber-
ties Association are suppor-
ting Press in his couragous
stand against this demeaning
remnant of colonia! oppres-
sion.

As a British Citizen who
immigrated to Canadu
because I disagree with their
system of hereditary privi-
lege, I find the following
wickedly ironic - In order to
become a Canadian Citizen,
1 must swear on oath of
allegiance to the woman,
who represents the very
systen that I came to
Canada to escape!

5 admire and empathize
with Mr. Press in his brave
stand for democracy and
while ’'m sure many of us

feel the same way regarding
this odious oath, most of us
lack the courage to say so.
Surely, it is self evident that
the anly oath of allegiance a
Canadian should swear is to
Canada.

If you agree with the sen-
timents expressed herein,
please write to your Member
of Parliament. Or simply
clip this letter from the
Newspaper and write ‘I
agree’ across it. Mr. Press
deserves our support and
together we can strike this
offensive little oath from
Canadian statutes forever!
