His matter-of-fact presen- tation draws upon training he has taken in helping in- dividuals with drug pro- blems. Since 1978 he has worked as counsellor and then coordinator of B.C. Tel’s employee assistance program, which operates as part of the Company’s health services department — a Pacesetter in the province in the provision of preventative health services to employees. Alt a recent presentation at Vancouver's Prince of Wales Secondary, Hockley told students that present day North American society ts the most drug abusing society in the history of mankind. He went on to define the range of substances which are rightfully termed ‘drugs’ — including caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. Itlustrating for the students the effects of various drugs, he outlined the body’s reac- tion to drugs taken in- dividually and in combination. The students, seated casually around the classroom, listened intently, sometimes interrupting with questions. Afterward many picked up government drug informa. tion brochures. Several stayed behind, even though it was their lunch break, to ask more questions.
