AS - Friday, July 13, 1984 - Nerth Shore News None so hypocritical as the NDP O, PM NOT going to go again into the N and wrongs of what happened to the Japanese here during the war. I did that three months ago and you know what my views are: the whole compensation and apology argument is a bunch of bosh encouraged by the weak-minded and by creepy-crawly politicians who would have been the first yelling for internment if they had been around when the victorious Japanese Navy could have been waiting just over the skyline to give us a good thumping. It is typical that Bnan Mulroney is leadme the compensation pack. Now there’s a big fuss go- img on m the loony capital of the world (otherwise known as Vancouver), because Sun columnist Denny Boyd @Seted Frank Bernard on the issue. Bernard, who was in charge of Japanese affairs here during the war, says apologies are not in order, and that the Japanese should thank Canada for the bumane treatment they recerved_ Boyd, meanwhile, dared to say that you can’t judge the circumstances of yesterday by those of today. Which simple truths have brought the usual pack out screaming. All three federal parties have practised supreme hypocrisy on this question in recent months, but none has been more hypocritical over the years than the NDP, formerly the CCF. And that’s interesting because | have a pamphlet put out by the Victoria CCF in the general election of 1945 which will show you that even the goody-goody socialists shared the mood of the day. | give it to you whole, including emphases, except for a final bit of irrele- vant waffle. ‘Fellow citizens: A cam- paign of lies and distortion about the CCF and the Japanese compels me to write this letter, trusting that you will be fair enough to read our side of this question. “The CCF: is not, and never has been pro-Japanese. **The CCF has always op- posed Japanese immigration into Canada because they are used to undermine wage stan- dards. In 1936, Angus Mcin- nis, MP of the CCF, moved at Ottawa that no more Japs be allowed into Canada. Every Liberal and Conser- vative voted against his at- tempt the to keep out Japanese. ‘*The CCF for years urged that the government stop the shipment of Canadian war materials to Japan. But for ten years, the Liberal and Conservative governments helped the Japs with tens of milhons of dollars of war materials. We will pay with Canadian lives for their pro- Japanese policy. **When war came — The CCF urged that all Japanese be moved from the Coast — and a CCF member sat on the get this straight board that moved them. “*The CCF policy 1s that any Japs who are disloyal, or who are Japanese citizens, or who wish to return to Japan, be sent back. “The CCF is opposed to the return of the Japs to B.C. and insists that Canadian congregate m any one area. The Liberal governmem 15 now preparme to do this. “The CCF pomted om, and Liberal Senagor Farms further comment a+ TMMecessary. Since J five within a short distance of a “neighborhood pub” I believe I am better qualified to comment on the effect of the establishments on the local residents. I am continually picking garbage off my front lawn, strewed: there by individuals who under the influence of even moderate consumption, appear to lose all ‘‘neighbor- ty’’ respect and consideration for my property. Mr. Blackwell’s further assertion that neighborhood ‘pubs allow locals to ‘‘walk’’ to the pub is refuted every opening night at the pub. If these establishments are truly local residents, then where are all the cars coming from? If the purpose of these pubs is to provide entertain- ment for locals, then I pro- pose that any future estab- lishment should provide parking only for employees.
