The art of being a spectator

While there’s nothing
more exciting than seeing a
ball bend the back of the net,
especially if it’s the enemy
net, fans can learn a lot
about the game by spending
time watching the different
positions rather than only
concentrating on the ball.

For example, the keeper.
Apart from the obvious
ability to keep balls out of
the net, does he collect the
high crosses easily and does
he have quick reactions?

Keep an eye on him and
see if he’s a talker — a
person who can give help
and direction to his back
line.

Watch them on the attack
and see when they go on an
overlapping = run. The
overlap works best when the
fullback times his run just
nght so that he will almost
always receive the ball. If he
doesn’t then he’s caught
down deep and may have to
make a long run back if the
opposition comes up with a
fast counterattack.

The pair of centre backs
must complement each
other. One should be good in
the air and able to dominate
anyone coming into his area
while the other should be a
bit more fluid and able to
pick up the ball and stan
things moving towards the
other end of the field.

in to support the front men.

engine room of the ship.
Quite often you can judge
what's happening in a game
by watching the midfields.

Carl Valentine uses his
strength and speed. Carl has
the added value of being
able to move into the middle
to take his chance on goal.

The people in the middle
of the front line come in a
wide variety. For instance
we have the big target man
like Ray Hankin who can
control and head a ball so
well, and then we have Peter
Beardsley and Alan Taylor,
both smaller men who have
to work and finesse their way
towards the net.

One advantage of the big
target man is that defenders
can direct long balls up to
him which he can control.

If you can analyze and
“pick apart” a game you can
get a lot more out of it than
simply sitting back and
waiting for goals. It's much
like watching a big, moving
chess game unfold.
