Gary Butcher, of 1165 Kings Avenue, in West Vancovuer, and his friend Chris Diajczer, of 2255 East 33rd Avenue, in Vancouver, were swept away while trying to cross the river near the suspension bridge. Their families had felt certain something had gone wrong when the two 17-year- olds failed to return home by dark on Sunday evening. It was a favonite fishing area of the youths and they knew the canyon so well that the possibility of their getting lost was discounted. The tragic circumstances Booze seized in W. Van LAST WEEKEND brought some thirsty moments for the owners of 61 cases of beer confiscated by West Vancouver police at local parks and beaches. Most of the liquor belonged to underage dnnkers and in most cases charges are impending as police say they will be “following up liquor problems vigorously.” . —miniature size, lightweight of their deaths were pieced together after their bodies were found Monday, floating tn a pool. Volunteer members of North Shore Rescue had launched a search of the canyon at about 2 a.m. Monday. By mid-morning, about 25 people had joined in the search, which was aided by helicopter sweeps of the canyon. Searchers set off from the Salmon Hatchery, scouring the canyon in both diretions. Hopes that the youths were still alive faded when a searcher found their shoes left on the rocks just south of the suspension bridge. It was known that the friends both had chest waders and that they had a technique of crossing creeks together by both holding on to the same fishing poles for balance. A short distance from where the shoes were found, the searcher saw the two bodies, tangled up in their fishing gear about 20 ft. from the river bank, in about 7 ft. of water. Searchers consider the tragedy occurred as a result of a misjudgement by the youths, since the water runs swiftly at the spot where they attempted to cross, at a depth of about 4 ft. Such a depth of fast water would make it next to im- possible not to be swept away, especially with the floaung effect of the chest waders they were wearing.
