THINKING SLIM Shopping on a skinny budget If you're concerned about your food budget (and these days, who isn't?) perhaps you've been postponing a weight control program because you don’t think you can afford it. People somehow have got- ten the notion that food con- sumed on a weight loss diet is more expensive than what they are used to eating. This may be true if your notion of “dieting” is nibbling deli- cately on truffles and shrimp with white wine, but, if you : Civilian” have a more. realistic regimen in mind, your diet needn't be overly expensive. Recently I went shopping with a friend, “a skinny who has never thought twice about her weight. Our totals at the checkout were within three dollars of each other, yet the contents of our shopping carts were very different. It’s true that some of the items I bought were more expensive than the counter- parts in my neighbor's cart — all beef-franks instead of hot dogs and fresh fruit instead of fruit canned in sugar syrup. Because I rely on broiled fish and chicken while my neighbor favors casseroles, | spent a bit more on those items, too. But then there were items that were less expensive for me than for my skinny neighbor: My un- sweetened cereal was less expensive than her sugar- coated kind and the fresh vegetables I selected would go a lot further than the ones frozen which she preferred. Aad then there were the items | avoided completely: Cook- i@s, cake mixes. candy, snacks, sugary sofi. drinks, deli items. While my friend wheeled her cart off in quest of these, I skipped whole aisles alto- gether. Most important, because my friend eats lunch oul two or three times a week and stops frequently after work for ice cream, vending machine snacks, CS - Sunday, May 2, 1982 - North Shore News chase represents only part of her weekly food ex- penditure. My cartful of groceries, however, was enough to get me through to the next shop- ping day. By cooking in quantity and freezing, mak- ing dishes from scratch, packing lunches to take to work and doing most of your eating at home, it is possible to actually spend less on food by being weight con- scious. Of course, the same mea- on food purchases can be taken by the dieter. These include clipping coupons, reading advertisements, buying items on sale in quantity. Finding “legal” dishes that appeal to all members of the family rather than cooking for yourself separately also helps the paycheck stretch further. All these measures can help make weight conscious eating cost effective. When you think about it, it makes “cents” to eat sensibly, even in seasoned sauce fast foods, etc., this pur- sures everyone takes to save ona “skinny” budget.
