A9 - Sunday, April 25, 1982 - North Shore News RES vrai x a Quality education is more than just money Dear Editor: The absorbing West Vancouver over the past months has been education financing and the inequity of provincial cost- sharing; and rightly so. Thankfully this issue has been resolved. (All details are in the April issue of Education/ West Van- couver, an insert in the Municipal News.) What concerned me in the media coverage of the issue in provincial cost-sharing dilemma was that while articles supposedly dealt with education, the topics were almost exclusively on education financing. My point here is that thequality of education our students receive cannot be tied to just financial consideration. The education process demands expertise, in- formation, planning, Organization, inspiration, ideas, dedication, co- Who decides ‘work Dear Editor: In Sunday's News, there were two letters dealing with “equal pay for work of equal value”. The writers seemed to be berating Dr. Walker for his ignorance in un- derstanding this phrase, but I too must confess to not being able to understand it.. How does one measure the value of work? Who will make the “value judgement, the employee or the employer? Are we to measure according to the well-being of the company, the well-being of humanity or what? om Let me give an example: there is an accident — the first to arrive is the am- bulance, the victim is given first aid, rushed to hospital, orderlies rush the victim to the operating room, made clean and sternle by the maintenance staff, he is operated on by a doctor, taken to his hospital room where he is nursed 24 hours a day by nurses, one nurse may change his bedpan, one nurse may inject needles, both do a worthwhile job. The victim is fed with food which has been planned with considerable care by a dietician who has to consider operation and just plain hard work on the part of all in- volved. For those who, point, are saying, “he forgot money,” the fact is that most of the ingredients mentioned cannot be obtained with just money on its own. It is unlikely that West Van- couver’'s superior educational product, proven by province-wide testing of our students each year, is achieved by spending more at this nutrition, cost, efficiency etc. The victim recovers and leaves a well man. Who was the most valuable” player in making this recovery play? Since they all contnbuted their skills to the best of their abilities, are they all entitled to the same pay? Do we consider the education and training involved, do we “measure” which individual on the recovery team was the most responsible for his recovery — the doctors or the first aid of the am- bulance drivers? I would like very much to understand better what rey Dangerous ‘burn out' Dear Editor: Mr. Miller says he was “amazed to see the local RCMP” using a radar gun on the steep downhill. This because people “burn out their brakes” to keep to the speed hmit on such a down hill. If he is mght, there are even more bad drivers about than I thought. important to check speed downhill. If you are rushing down over the limit, already “burning your brakes out’, what happens if a child runs out? You have no braking power left, have you? It is most You don't need to “burn out your brakes” anyway. If the hill is tht steep, use third gear. Seymour Parkway is a good example: come down in third gear and you will hardly need your brakes. Mr. Miller and others who think as he does should take a defensive driving course. John Simeon North Vancouver LOOK SENSAT TIONAL... FEEL GREAT!
