OTTAWA(UPC)- Growth
in defense spending will be 3
per cent a year until 1985 to
meet Canada’s military
needs and its obligations to
the North Atlantic Treaty
Organization, Defence
Minister Minister Gilles
Lamontagne said recently.
In an opening speech to
the annual conference of
Defence Associations;
Lamontagne said it would be
irresponsible to hold down
military spending because
Canada’s allies have un-
dertaken to improve
NATO's military capability.
In terms of Canada’s
security, he said, the failure

to maintain a minimum level

tamount to ignoring the
military threat of the Soviet
Union. —

“We expect to see an
increase in the defence
budget in 81-82, and ... we
have an undertaking with
our allies to do everything
possible to continue to in-
crease the budget by at least
3 per cent in real terms,“
Lamontagne said.

“I believe we can be
assured that this will be the
case until at least 1983-84,”
said the minister, who added
