Standards for sauna
heaters are now being
revised to provide more
built-in safety as
recommended by con-
sumers. For instance,
the standard will
require saunas to con-
tain corrosion-resistant
matenals in order to
reduce any hazards
caused by rusting.

This rcoommendation is
one of over 45 which have
been passed this year by the

Canadian Standards
Association's (CSA) Con-

Toronto. A cross section of
the community participates
on these pancis and makes
recommendafions to CSA's
committees.

The first consumer group
was established in Toronto
in 1976 and two years later,
another one was formed in
Vancouver. This fall, a third
one. will be created in
Montreal.

“Consumer Advisory Pan-
els are making a real con.
tribution to the development
of standards. This can only
mean that products in the
marketplace, meeting those
standards will be more
satisfactory to consumers,”

explains Wendy Butler,
CSA’s consumer coor-
dinator.

During the past season,
the consumers studicd a
number of CSA standards
covering many products.
These include industrial cye
and face protectors in which
case it was recommended
that a certification program
be instituted. The CSA
committee ts in agreement,
and are now drafting a
standard with certification in
mind

Consumers also wanted 4
warning label on microwave
ovens to discourage people
from using them if the doors
were not properly secured

Canadians with a say in
standards which affect a
wide varicty of products.
The Association has also
doubled the number of
consumer representatives
serving as voting members
on us technical committces.

open forum in which all
interested groups can
participate,” says Butler.
