Most granola cereals

WASHINGTON (UPI) -
Granola cereals contain 22
per cent to 32 per cent sugar,
placing them in the mid-
range of all cereals tested, a
research chemist for the
U.S. Agriculture Depart-
ment has reported.

Kellogg's Country
Morning had the highest
average amount of sugar
compared to the dry weight
of the product — 31 per cent
— among three boxes each
of 14 nationally-distributed
granola cereals tested, the
report said.

ment’s Nutnent Composition
Laboratory in_ Beltsville,
Md., showed granola cereals
are far more uniform in
sugar content than con-
ventional cereals.

cent for Kellogg's Sugar
Smacks, to a low of 0.1 per
cent for Quaker Oats’ Puffed
Rice.

“Consumers who want to
know how granola cereals
compare with conventional
cereals in sugar content may
find it interesting that all of
the granolas are very near
the middle of the range,” Li
said.

She said 28 of the con-
ventional cereals have more
sugar than the granola
brands, 27 have less sugar,
and seven are in the same 22
per cent range.
