page 4 - June 22, 1977 - Every once in a while somebody comes up with statistics that ‘‘prove’’ young people cause more accidents than any other age group, such as drivers under 21 make up 10 per cent of the drivers and have 28 per cent of the accidents. —~ It has been suggested a number of times that the driving age be raised to 18. This week the Inquiring Reporter asks, ‘‘Should the driving age be raised to 18?”’ North Shore News — nr ec nes Franca Terlizzi North Vancouver No, I don’t think so. Children ages six through 12 are welcome to come and play, participate in games, organized sports, arts and crafts, special events, excur- sion outings and more. At each playground the leaders will orgnize activities, ac- cording to the interest of the children, so that programs may vary from playground to playground. The program is organized by the West Van Parks and Recreation Commission. Registration takes place Monday, July 4 at the Recreation Centre (22nd and Marine) and at the following. playgrounds: Cypress Park, Parc Verdun, West Bay, Chartwell School and Glen- more School. The fee is $5 (excursions extra). The playground leaders are knowledgeable in the organizing of many active games, that children really enjoy, many of which are non-traditional games and are a refreshing change from those usually played. In addition the playgrounds have facilities for soccer, soft ball, cossum hockey and volleyball. Arts and crafts are an important activity, with pro- jects ranging from tie dye, print making and macrame to | clay modelling, puppet craft and candle making. Some group activity crafts are” being planned, including sculpture, murals and foot- painting. Every week each play- “ground has an excursion. Possible excursions are pic-. nic-hikes, swim parties, museum and gallery visits, a trip to a farm, a day’s outing ‘to U.B.C. to see the dairy barn, a Braille demonstra- tion, and a hike through the’ Endowment Lands, roller skating, fishing, to mention a few. The Playground Program has special events for child- ren all through the summer, including bicycle rallies and rodeos, ice cream parties, puppet shows, drama (pres- ented by the children), movies, games days and tournaments. This year the playground program will include a special exercise program entitled KIDS IN ACTION. This program will be com- posed of running, (fun. runs—a non-competitive run that encourages participation of all age groups. Parents are invited to join us in running), plus exercises geared for children, to help. improve fitness. A fitness instructor will visit each* playground several times a week with information on fitness and will ensure that the programs are geared to the needs and requirements of the individ- ual children. The playgrounds will op- erate mostly outdoors, but facilities (gyms, classrooms and field houses) are avail- able for games and crafts on tainy days.
