program specially designed
to develop the knowledge,

prepared in British Columbia
and. is ready for trial
teaching and evaluation in
classrooms across Canada.

“This. may be the first time
‘a Curriculum designed for

province,” said Dr. Kip
Anastasiou, director of the
cancer education project for
secondary schools for the
B.C. and Yukon Division of
‘the Canadian Cancer Society

with the Western Education
Development Group
(WEDGE) of the Faculty of
Education, University of-
British Columbia. .-

The Canadian Cancer
Society decided to fund the
development of a cancer
education program for
senior secondary schools
and work began- last June as
a cooperative project
between WEDGE and the
Society.

The program has been
planned to suit existing
biology and social studies
curricula and includes a
series of student activities,
reading materials, displays,

source books for teachers,
and a videotape. The
videotape, “Cathy”, focuses
on a young wife and mother
with cancer and her family,
and examines the reactions
of a number of people to
cancer and its impact on
their everyday life.

“The activities we suggest
include demonstrations of
the effects of cigarette
smoking, using smoking
machines the students can
construct,” Dr. Anastasiou
said.
