30 - Sunday, July 21, 1991 ~ North Shore News BUSINESS New fax software garnering raves IF THE prediction of a West Vancouver computer wunderkind proves correct, the stand-alone fax machine will likely send and receive its way to the office of oblivion before the decade closes. George Pajari, president of Faximum Software Inc., has set the UNIX (multi-user operating system for computers) world spinning faster with the release of a new fax software package. Fax- imum has garnered a rave review in the August issue of UNIX- World (a magazine focusing on the UNIX computer industry) and has drawn licensing interest from several major computer com- panies. The Faximum software design team spent about two years deep in product development, discar- ding two versions before taking the leap to market earlier this year. The company now includes software engineers, a director of sales and Pajari’s wife and vice- president Carolanne Reynolds. A recognized UNIX systems and software expert, Pajari founded three companies — Clarendon Datex (a computer consulting firm), Trainix (a train- ing company specializing in UNIX courses and C programming) and NEWS photo Mike Wakefiotd FAXIMUM SOFTWARE Inc. president and director of engineer- ing George Pajari is taking fax into the future with a software product that allows UNIX operating system-based computer users to fax better and more cost-effectively. The West Van- couver company has created much interest in the computer in- dustry. Said Pajari, ‘Although con- sulting is rewarding in terms of technical challenge and financially rewarding, we knew if we were to be successful in any long term we would have to develop a product and leverage our skills into the product so that we could then sell copies of that rather than sell our hours. “If you are a computer person, there are two ways to capitalize on your skills: sell them an hour at a time and drop dead after some number of years from burnout, with, you hope, something in the bank, or develop a product,”’ he added. Pajari and company assessed their combined skill inventory, surveyed the market, and decided the road to success was best trav- elled by developing a fax product for the UNIX operating system. The result is a package that combines power and simplicity. Faximum incorporates full- screen menus and backs user operation with 280 help screens. UNIX system users send and receive faxes directly from their terminals; access prepared cover sheets, invoices, price lists; automatically send out at the least expensive calling times; send to desktop publishing quality stand- ards; and keep a detailed account of fax use. Rather than aiming to be the first kid on the block with a UNIX-based fax software offer- ing, Faximum Software Inc. — a small company without deep pockets and active in a volatile market — kept an eye to the technological edge. Said Pajari, *‘The big difference between us and the other com- panies is that we wouldn't settle for less. It’s a reality that we don't have a $4-million or $10- million company behind us. We realized that as a small Canadian company, the only way to succeed was by being obviously superior and Iet our reputation compensate for our lack of promotion. We could have got to market with a much simpler product and then tried to compensate by marketing and distribution. But we can’t play that game. So we have to be better.”" The North Shore news is giving away 5 pairs of tickets to INTO THE LIGHT TOUR SUNDAY AUGUST 4 7:30 PACIFIC COLISEUM THES VOICE OF NORTH AND WEST VANCOUVER: One entry per person Entry must be to the North Shore News hy Monday July 29, 12 noon.
