Shore Taxi coupons A NORTH Vancouver hotel and a local taxi company have joined forces to reduce the number of drinking drivers on the road. By Surj Rattan News Reporter The Avalon Hotel has purchas- ed 700 coupons from North Shore Taxi Ltd. that are handed out free to Avalon Hotel patrons who may be too impaired to drive. North Shore Taxi marketing and pubiic relations manager Barr Turner said the cab vouchers allow the user to deduct $2 off the price of a taxi ride. “| thought it was a good idea to get drinking drivers off the road,’’ Turner said. He added that he first ap- proached Avalon Hotel owner Ken Hutchinson with the idea. **He listened to me and he ac- cepted the idea. Hopefully I can get these coupons out to other establishments as well. We've always had the coupons, but we reaily haven’t gone to the drinking establishments with them before,’’ said Turner. He added that the Avalon Hotel is currently the only North Shore hotel to offer the coupons to its customers. “People don’t have a fot of money these days so these coupons help them out. The bars are always being accused of sup- plying too much liquor to peo- ple,”’ said Turner. Hutchinson said the taxi coupons have been well received by the Avalon’s customers. “It’s a good way to get drink- ing drivers off the road,’’ he said. New pump approved for Lions Gate sewage plant $475,000 upgrade for 32-year-old facility THE GREATER Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) approved a $475,000 upgrade for the Lions Gate sewage plant at its board meeting Tuesday. By Chery! Ziola Contributing Writer The upgrade will include the replacement of a substandard sewage plant pump that has caus- ed overflow problems in the past. North Vancouver District Mayor Murray Dykeman recalled that about eight years ago heavy rains caused an overflow at the Lions Gate plant following a pump breakdown. Untreated sewage spilled into Hastings Creek. Environment Canada _ then charged and fined the district, he said. Since then, the 32-year-old plant, serving both North and West Vancouver, has suffered ad- ditional overflows that were diverted through other mains be- fore dumping into Burrard Inlet. In addition to the new pump, a new standby emergency power generator will be added to the plant by next year. ‘Some of these programs just simply have to start,’’ Dykeman said in a later interview. ‘‘We have to be more environmentally sensitive and think of protection first.”" While sewage plant upgrading is necessary, he added that conserva- tion is also essential to ensure the treatment plant’s longer working fe. - “Like not dumping so much’ water out of: your house,”’ Dykeman said.
