The nuniber of part-time employees na- tion-wide has almost doubied in three years. The reasons are many. Profit-strapped companies have. found the use of part-time labor attractive ‘ because employees with less than full-time ‘status — between 19 and 24 hours a week, depending on the industry — do not quali- ‘fy for the benefits. full-time. employees are guaranteed by law. a . The report states that’ the part-time labor force has grown because of a lack of op- tions for job seekers. But companies who are shifting to a part-time labor force (ie. Canada Post) are the ones responsible for feeding this destabilizing process. LETTER OF THE DAY Fair coverage. makes true ‘community’ paper : Dear Editor: ~"Thave'a criticism of the North '., Shove. News — its editorial policy, ."@r even the policy of the owners of: the paper, or all three! I hope ‘, you'll dare to print my letter. During the many years I. have lived on.the North Shore I have read about ‘the awards the North ~ Shore; News has. won as a com- munity newspaper. - However, there is one area for which I would not give the paper an award. That is,- even- handedness when it comes to giv- ing all political parties a fair share of reporting or attention, especially when’ an election is in . federal. 1 find coverage uneven, if not downright biased in favor of the bigger parties (PCs or Liberals). As a citizen of the North Shore “1 believe I have the right to expect — a community newspaper, par- ticularly one that.holds a virtual monopcly, to provide space and information in a fair and even- handed manner .for all parties fielding candidates, that is: Reform, NDP, National Party, as well as PCs and Liberals. The two :latter get more than their fair share of attention. However, ; you did-a great job reporting the nominating meeting of the National Party (although only 26 people were in atten- dance), but I’ve seen very little in your paper of NDP activities. Only by fsirly representing all parties will the electorate of the. North Shore be able to make in- formed choices and vote in a democratic .fashion for the can- didates who best represnt their views. This is not ‘Brazil of the North,”’ the Argentine, Havana or Mexico! Providing fair coverage and in- formation on all parties will en- sure yours is truly a, ‘‘community” newspaper worthy of winning awards. . S.E. If you want to keep them, kid ’ em that it’snew...new... NEW. Yét I sometimes wonder if there isn’t a bit more to Salesman- ship 100 than that. Don’t people sometimes simply like to go on repeating something they feel warm and comfy with? Don’t they sometimes bond with it for years or a lifetime, tike parents bond with their kids? Christmas, which has produced nothing fundamentally new (ex- cept the credit card) for centuries, is the supreme example, I guess. But the calendar bursts with’other annual holidays — from Easter and Canada Day to Thanksgiving -and Remembrance Day — which we doggedly go on enjoying each year simply because we ALWAYS have. Add to the list all the annual community occasions we share: community days, heritage waiks, Days in Scotland, clam chowder contests, Harmony Arts Festivals, you name it — each successive one | virtually a carbon copy of its predecessor.
