Competitors began the race up the 2.9-kilometre trail ar the Valley Station on Saturday and finished ar the peak of Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver, 3,700 feet above sea level. 37-year-old Derek Zimmerman of Squamish tackled the trail and crossed the finish ling first with a time of 32:10. Delta’s 33-vear-ald Veronica Redway was the first woman to make the top with a posted time of 36:29. Leanne Johnson holds the women’s record with a time of 33:23 set at the 1999 event. Burnaby’s Rowelif Justus set the pace in the 60-plus age division with a time of 38:06. The voungest finisher — with a time of 39:09 — was seven-year-old Lee Dawson of North Vancouver. “Jr was really fun today,” said Dawson, who also ser a personal best time at the event, “I do the Grind twice a week with my dad, who fin- ished right after me, bur this was my first race.” Participants set their pace ar the warm up event and return on September 16 to measure their improvemenz aus the = Grouse Grind Mountain Ran. Dawson said that despite his great showing during the weekend, he plans to keep training and hopes to post a better time this fall when he competes in the Mountain Run.
