The city will also explore the possibility of getring into the energy business by cither owning or co-owning the energy system. Inviting a pri- vate company to finance and run the system is also being considered. As originally reported in the April 27 News, a system for Lower Lonsdale would supply heating energy from a central source through under- ground pipes to a number of surrounding buildings. Energy would be distrib- uted to buildings in the form of hot water or steam carried through insulated pipes. Some possible options tor the central energy source include: at ocean-source heat pump (which would harness the inherent energy = of Burrard Inlet water), natural gas-fired boilers, a geothermal pump, and a combsnation af sources. The system is currently in use in Vancouver by Central Heat Distribution, which has operated a steam-based dis: trict heating system in the dow ntown core for many years. Similar energy systems are rast commonly found in large institutions such as Vancouver General Hospiral and the University of B.C. City project engincer Ray Fung, who made a presenta- tion to counci! Monday night, said the project fits in with the city’s goal to be a sustainable city. “The goal is balanced envi- ronmental impact, economic impact and social impact,” Fung said.
