| Editorial NDP minister Dear Editor: -I would like to respond to your Feb. 9 editorial “Off the trough” which describes a ministry program’s grant to North Vancouver's Northern Marine Farm as irresponsible “tossing money at the private sector aquaculture experiments.” The Partners in Progress program is an industry-driven initia- tive that encourages the agriculture, fisheries and products, increase competitiveness and adapt new technology. The program provides only a portion of total costs for projects that are selected through a rigorous screening process. So far, the Partners in Progress program has invested $3.2 million in 101 : projects valued at more than $17.4 million. -. ¥es, these are tough times, but when government invests seed money, wisely the dividends are paid back i in communities all over the province.” :, A good example is the $25 million industry that was created out of: the hake fishery. Hake, that once fetched eight cents per _ pound ‘and was processed off-shore, is now processed in B.C. cre- ating a lucrative, value-added product and 130 new jobs. ‘These are not hand-outs to increase profits for private compa- _nies — these are investments in industry that reap wide-spread benefits. A good retum for taxpayers’ money. » » David Zirmnhelt : Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food vine WEEE einaikx. Winter Games. The. people of North Vancouver have once again shown their warm and wel- coming spirit, as hosts of the 1996 B.C. Winter Games. This spirit was demon- strated not only by the hun- dreds of active volunteers who worked around-the- clock, but spread throughout the rinks, gyms, streets and community where hundreds more North Vancouverites showed up to cheer local and visiting athletes and their teams. irkkS | Good Games hosts Whether the event was badminton, skiing or hockey, there was a lively crowd in attendance. Helping to spread the good news about the Games was a dedicated group of Games organizers and media, such as the North Shore News with its news items and special features. As with any successful endeavor, the B.C. Games was the result of a tremen- dous team effort —- even the weather put on its best front.
