NOT TOO long ago a Jewish
law student at the University
‘of Alberta cailed me to get the

word on Bill 33. Which, in
case you have forgotten, is the
NDP’s and the Canadian
Jewish Congress’ idea of
heaven. In short, gagging
Doug and anyone else who
doesn’t want to park his
thoughts in the Gulag of offi-
cially permitted speech.

At first } had my doubts about
him. But Ezra Levant is the real
thing. a maverick who doesn’t want
to answer to politically correct com-
mands and challenges university big-
wigs, the CJC, and all deniers of free
thought.

The universities of today are not
exactly places where free discussion
thrives. The orthodox activists in
academe are the intellectual descen-

’ dants of the Commissars. Given the
right circumstances, they would BE
Commissars.

Only those who proclaim
“women's rights,” “minority rights”
and similar notions (or who keep
their mouths shut) are safe from the
basilisk eye, and university deans
fall in line or actually lead the
parade.

‘Thus, at the U of A, they have
brought in an edict that is even
worse than Bill 33.

“No student shall disseminate or
cause to be disseminated material, or
engage in activity ...:which hinders
or prevents the full participation of
another person or group in the life of
the university.”

“It really makes my heart soar
with jor) when I come across
someone: who has sensible ideas -
on the rearing of children.

Both my husband and I are well
into our 40s and we have done the
bit about rearing children and we _
feel rather’ successfully. _

We. both had a fairly strict

‘upbringing in England ata time -

when if you did something wrong
as a child you were told once only
and ‘if. you continued, then came
the “‘cuffing.”

In a short time you learned not
to do it. ;

I can even remember getting a
“cuff round the earhole” from my
local Bobby (policeman) when I
was. just about 14 years old for
doing something that he knew my
mother would not approve of.

Now we don’t think that we
have turned out too badly our-
selves, and we don’t think aur kids
have either. ‘

We.both kept to the rules of our
upbringings when raising our chil-
dren, although we both must admit
to being a little more lenient than
our mothers. ; ae

We do not agree that: battering
your children or even spanking
them for every trivia is right, just
that'a smack now and again makes
them realize that “no means no.”

Quite often, especially around
stores, you will find children not
only crying and screaming but hrit-
ting and sometimes kicking their
parents, and there is nothing worse
than hearing “don’t do that sweety
it's not very nice.” :

has pointed out in the Edmonton
Journal, “The administration is spin-
ning a web so sticky that it can just
pick and choose which annoying stu-
dents to catch.” Furthermore. “the
trap will only be sprung on those
organizations that oppose the politics
of the deans.”

So don't look to the U of A (or
for that matter to UBC, etc.) to hakt
the trend. Look even less toward the
NDP. Its black record is clear. “The
courts dgn't always do what we want
them to do.” Hence Bill 33. In the
meantime, the NDP is sending all
civil servants to costly brainwashing
sessions.

Levant has also challenged
Jewish groups that imagine the “hate
Jaws” provide them with the censors”
equivalent of the atom bomb.

In an article in Edmonton Jewish
Life, headed “Free speech is a Jew's
best friend." he stated:

“What really worries ine and
what should worry every Jew, is the
larger social fallout that comes from
censoring uncomfortable tdeas and
hateful speech.

“The courts — with the CIC's
glowing approvai — are setting
some dangerous precedents ..."

And he warns: ;

“Even the slightest censorship
can and must strike at Jews, for Jews
are always at the centre of controver-
sial thought. Some Jews might hope
that hate-speech laws will be applied
precisely enough to censor only anti-
Semites. Let us not be so naive...

“Today we grin as Keegstra
squirms for us. Favor that fecling
while it lasts; we may be on trial
next... what goes around comes
around. And one day it will be us
who are gagged by the censor.”

Being for the most part cowards
where powerful pressure groups are
concemed, politicians go along with
censorship. That's why we have the
hate laws, for there was certainly no
popular demand for them. And what
