A MAN well-known to local
police was arrested Wednesday in
North Vancouver folowing a stab-
bing and arson attack involving a
retired psychiatrist in Vancouver.

North Vancouver RCMP Insp.
Jamie Graham said police arrested
Fraser Begg after an alert consta-
ble spotted the wanted man riding
his bicycle past the police station

on 13th Street.

Begg, 46, faces charges of
attempted murder and arson.

The victim in the March 30
attack, 65-year-old Dr. Michael
Roburn, was stabbed near the
lungs and heart but has been
released from hospital.

His Shaughnessy mansion was
torched. Begg was Roburn’s
patient in 1989.

Begg sometimes slept under the
Second Narrows Bridge and was
once ousted from a North
Vancouver storage locker he had
lived in, said Graham.

He phoned Graham “quite a
bit.” but what he said did not make
much sense, the RCMP Inspector

said,

“He just chats,” said Graham.

Meanwhile, Vancouver City
Police Const. Anne Drennan said
local RCMP officers were briefed
after Vancouver police received
tips about Begg.

Begg was apprehended minutes
after the briefing.

“Jt was very bizarre,”
said of the arrest.
