A home's drinking water supply
is one source of potential health
hazards, especially if it comes from
a private well. Some of the most
common drinking water contami-
nants that can easily be tested for
include: :

_ Coliferm bacteria — The pres-
ence of these, bacteria. indicate
unfiltered or poorty filtered surface
water has found its’way into ground
water or the well.”

Lead in the water supply —
Long-term ingestion of high levels
of lead can result in serious health
effects, even coma or death. Lead is

believed to be especially harmful to
children, affecting their mental
development. The Environmental
Protection Agency estimates 20%
or more of a person’s total lead
exposure can come from lead in
water.

Nitrate —- In some infants less
than six-months-old, high levels of
nitrate in drinking water can cause a
condition known as met hemoglo-
binemia, or blue baby syndrome. In
infants with this condition, the
blood’s ability to carry oxygei to
body tissues is reduced and the skin
takes on a bluish hue similar to that
causéd by suffocation.

Pesticides --- For rural residents
especially, pesticides such as
atrazine may also present potential
health risks.

Fluscride — New homeowners
who get their drinking water from a
well and who. have children may
want to check fluoride levels in
