Jaguars boast new, improved shift changes From page 30 smoother, faster gear changes, is achieved with a new low-inertia torque converter for the electroni- cally controlled four-speed ZF automatic transmission. The list of six-cylinder engine modifications is comprehensive: ¢ Revised induction porting and new a higher-lift camshaft provide improve engine breathing (hence performance) and volumetric effi- ciency; « New design pistons increase the compression ratio from 9.5:1 to 10.0:1; and * New, 20% lighter valves offer a reduction in the power lost due to friction in the vaive train, as well as reducing engine noise. The semi-sequential fuel injec- tion system utilizes a new throttle body and revised fuel injectors. As well, knock sensors have been mounted to the engine block to assure optimum ignition timing and low emissions. Designed to accommodate new individual ignition coils mounted at each spark plug, a new magnesium alloy camshaft cover, combined with a newly covered fuel rail, pro- vides a pleasing new esthetic under the hood. The legendary 6.0-litre, 12- cylinder XJS Coupe and Convertible engine is also revised for 1995. Modifications to the engine management system allow the aluminum alloy V12 to achieve 301 brake horsepower (compared to 284 b.h.p. in 1994) at 5,400 r.p.m. and an impressive 351 ft.- Ibs. of torque (versus 340 in 1994) at 2,800 r.p.m. On 4.0-litre models, new “vari- able assist” steering offers greater road feel and directional centro! by reducing the amount of power steering at higher road speeds. The level of power assistance, however, remains high for parking and low- speed manocuvyes. While the 4,0-litre and V12 models are both characteristically Jaguar high-performance grand _ touring cars; their different natures are clearly evident by their enhanced exterior appearances. Color-keyed door mirrors, grille and headlamp bezels of the sporting 6.0-liire models contrast with the chrome mirrors and headlamp sur- rounds of the 4.0 litre car. The 6.0-litre also features dis- creet new silver-toned V12 badges on the front fender and new-for- 1995 20-spoke alloy road wheels, with diamond-tumed surfaces and eggshell painted inner faces. Each road wheel features a gold-tone “srowler” — the instantly recog- nizable growling cat symbol that adorns the XJS hood — on the cen- tre caps.
