WV fund
helps arts

THE WEST Vancouver Founda-
tion started in 1979 when then-
mayor Derrick Humphries orga-
nized and. incorporated the non-
profit organization.

Fourteen years ago he persuad-
ed a number of citizens to donate
to a seed fund to create the foun-
dation. The kick-off amount of
$21,000 is today —- thanks to the
many contributions by public-
spirited citizens - topping
$450,000.

This money, from both
residents and corporations, is in-
vested, with the interest providing
money every year to fund pro-
grams that contribute to the quali-
ty. of the West Vancouver com-
munity.

Last year, the West Vancovuer
Foundation distributed $20,000 in
grants, and has set the ambitious
goal of doubling that output for
this year.

Foundation chairman Jim
Cameron is asking West Van-
couver residents to consider start-
ing a fund ‘‘in your lifetime, so
you can influence its direction,
and experience the pleasure of see-
ing your money at work in the life
of the community.”

The symphony, opera, art
gallery, dance recitals, schools,
parks, hospitals, and dozens of
other activities all directly benefit
from the foundation, Cameron
added.

Throughout B.C., the 156 regis-
tered foundations, with a combin-
ed asset base of $700 million, give
away $70 mitiion every year,
