Much to see while touring Highway No. 3

certain elements of ‘The
Old West Trail.’

Phoenix, now virtually deserted.

you how to get to the cemetery —-
I'm told it’s one of those un-
discovered gems.

Grand Forks was our first
night’s stop. I read an editorial in
the local paper despairing of the
standards of accommodation in
Grand Forks, and | didn’t find
anything to change my mind,

One of the highlights of that
area is to have a Russian
Doukhobor meal, and we
despaired when we heard the Yale
Hotel burned down earlie: this

year.

. Instead, we ate at the Grand
Forks Hotel, right downtown, just
before. the bridge. Excellent —
don’t miss it. =

The‘ borscht is poetry, and 1]
even got a recipe for Pyrahi (sour
cream pastries).

The reconstructed RCMP fort is
a pleasant visit.

During the summer, local stu-
dents, costumed, reproduce the
Musical Ride (we caught the last
of the season, today).

The main street is reconstructed
— not glitzy but as it reallywas —
I know as I lived here for two
years during the war.

But the highlight of the visit is
to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo
Jump. It's a superb four-storey
museum built on the site of an

authentic Blackfoot (and other
tribes) buffalo slaughtering area.
In short, the animals were
stampeded over the cliff and
butchered at the bottom.
