22 - Friday, February 28, 1992 - North Shore News Woodward’s marks birthday with year-long celebrations AN ASSORTMENT of entertainment and an appearance by West Vancouver District Mayor Mark Sager will be the order of the day on Sunday at the Woodward’s store at the Park Royal Shopping Centre when the company celebrates its 100th anniversary. The event will launch a year- long celebration that will feature the merchandise, people and traditions of Woodward's, On Sunday, customers at all Woodward’s stores will be invited to have their pictures taken, a copy of which will be provided to them free of charge. A second copy of the photo will be placed in a giant photo album, along with a list of customer’s wishes for themselves, family or the : future. The giant photo album will then be stored in Woodward's archive and opened on the company’s 125th anniversary. ‘*Woodward’s has been suc- cessfully serving Western Cana- dians for a century. Shore choir sings in concert THE NORTH Shore Chorus joins the Vancouver Chamber Choir and the Vancouver Bach Children’s Chorale for a concert performance Saturday at Queens Avenue United Church in New Westminster. The North Shore Chorus, which will host this year’s Chorfest — a provincial choral festival held in North Vancouver this May — is a 60-voice community choir found- ed in 1975. Conductors Terence Pitt- Brooke, Jon Washurn and Diane Loomer will direct Saturday’s program, called Due North, which features music from England, Scandinavia, the Baltic states and Canada. The. company was founded by Charles Woodward, who moved his family from Eastern Canada to the west in 1891. A year later he opened his first store at the corner of Main and Georgia in Vancouver. In 1910 Charles Woodward Originated the one price sale con- cept. What began as ‘‘25 Cent Day"’ has now evolved into **$1.49 Day’’. Woodward’s is also credited with building the first shopping mall in Canada. The Park Royal! Shopping Centre opened its doors in West Vancouver in September 1950. At the time, travelling to West Vancouver across the Lions Gate Bridge required motorists to pay a toll at the north end of the bridge. Youth symphony performs THE VANCOUVER Youth Symphony’s [Intermediate Or- chestra is breaking in a new season Sunday night with its Spring Splash concert. Under the direction of guest conductor Eric Wilson, the or- chestra will perform Haydn's London Symphony and Sibelius’ Finlandia and other works. French horn player Adrienne de Wit and eight other North Shore students are performing in Sunday's concert About 200 students currently play with the youth orchestra.
