Question: P have been reading
your columas on financial
assistance for post-secondary stu-
dents, and | want to know more
about bursaries and scholarships.

Answer: A bursary is a non-
repayable award that is granted on
the basis of financial need, al-
though other factors such as aca-
demic standing and community
involvement may also be consid-
ered.

Eligibility could be related to
such things as parents’ military
service benefits, father's or
mother’s employer or union af-
filiation, church, service club, or
community organization member-
ship.

You would be advised to find
out whether your parents are af-
filiated with an employer, union,
club, of other organization that
offers scholarships or busaries to
dependents.

Bursary applications are avail-
able at the beginning of each
term, from the financial aid office
of your school. Some bursaries.
however, require that the applica-
tion be filled out in May,
preceding your term of school.
Depending on the bursary, there
may be special eligibility require-
ments, such as completion of one
successful academic year, or that
you are a mature student entcring
a specific department.

automatic selection. fn these
eases, you would be informed by
your school or the donor, Usually,
you will be presented with a
soucher that you would use at

External) awards are funds
granted by agencies or groups
outside of the college or universi-
ty, and are not administered by
the school. In other words, ap-
plication would be made directly
to the granting body.

The Work-study Program, a
part of the British Columbia Stu-
dent Assistance Program
({BCSAP), is designed to provide
on-campus work experietice for
students requiring financial
assistance while attending school.

A limited number of part-time
on-campus jobs, averaging five to
10 hours per week, may be avail-
able. The program is open only to
students demonstrating a financial
need under the terms of the
BCSAP.

For more information, bursary
and scholarship application forms,
the names of external funders,
and information on your eligibility
for the Work-study Program,
contact the financial aid office of
the school you plan to attend.
Useful publications are the
Awards and Financial Aid guides
pertaining to the school of your
choice.
