MAILBOX Cherry tree story was low biow to merchants Dear Editor: 1 would like to comment on the recent article by News reporter Michael Becker about the cutting of Edgemont Village cherry trees. At first, the article states that the ‘‘merchants’’ went to council and complained. Next it states that ‘“‘merchants and customers” complained. Finaily, it names “two dress shops’’ as making ail the racket, as stated by the presi- dent of the Edgemont Village Merchant Association. There aren’: that many dress shops in the village. Granted, no one knew, possibly not even the supplier, that the trees would bear fruit. But to take a fow shot at those merchants was akin to putting a big neon sign in front of their stores and saying “Yep — they did it.” Come one — where's your sense of fair play? I do, however, have a hard time with the Sunshine Girl. L hope that you are a responsi- ble business that listens to your readers. Often when women speak out against degradation towards other women, it is brushed off oar it is made a huge issue about por- nography. It’s very sad to me that men cn- ly get one image of women as sexy. There are many shapes and sizes of both women and men that have plenty of beauty. Don't like 1t? Turn Dear Editor: Realizing the News gets pum- melled with letters every time a Sunshine Girl poses for the cam- era, I thought, why not join the crowd? Most complain about por- nography in a local paper and many of those are people who just can’t turn that page. They seem forced to stare at it while they bang out another letter to the edi- tor slamming the publication for printing such rubbish. To those people I say, turn the page if you don’t like it, but please don’t try to speak for everyone because § enjov !noking Why don’t you give your men and women a chance to grow? To move beyond a simplistic view of women? Why not give a picture of . either a woman or a man who has done something in a contributing manner to our community? In July 1987, 24 persons under 20 years old in B.C. tested HIV positive. In August 1990 that number had grown to 113. The most recent statistics indicate a growth to 126 in December 1990. Only two other B.C. health districts have more AIDS cases than the North Shore which, in August 1990, had 35 of the 806 individuals reported. This number has grown to 40 of the 862 AIDS cases as of January 1991 and the North Shore continues to maintain third place. The AIDS mortality rate has increased from 64 per cent to 66 per cent as of January 1991. As we debate the issue of mak- DRAPERIES BY S.
