Vancouver Teachers’ Association
does not think teachers should
strike to protest School Finance

WV pastor ordained bishop

MSGR. PETER J. Malton, the pastor of Wes. Van-
couver’s St. Anthony’s Parish, was ordained bishop
Friday at Vancouver's Holy Rosary Cathedral.

In November, Mallon was appointed by Pope John
Paul I} to succeed retiring Bishop Emmett Doyle as
Bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese in Nelson,
B.C.

The Nelson diocese covers an area of [23,272
square kilometres in the West Kootenay region of
B.C. and has a Catholic population of over 62,000.

Mallon was born in 1929 in Prince Rupert.

He entered the Seminary of Christ the King Mission
at the start of his high school years and continued his
studies until he was ordained into the priesthood in
1956.

His first appointment was as assistant at the Holy
Rosary Cathedral in 1956 and the next year he was
appointed chancellor of the archdiocese.

Mallon was appointed pastor of the St. Anthony's
Parish in 1982 and served in that position until Fri-
day.
