Manners wrong with breastfeeding advice Dear Editor: I am writing in response to Miss Manners’ column of Sept. 24, headed Breast-feeding, bosses don’t mix. The new mother’s baby cried to be fed while her boss and daughter were visiting. She discreetly fed her baby and stated, ‘‘My boss didn’t bat an eyelash,’ but the mother wondered if she’d been unprofes- sional. I was disappointed with Miss Manners’ reply that, first, this was an odd situation. Odd? Even babies have to eat and this mother had chosen the optimum means of providing nutrition for her infant that is recommended by the Cana- dian Paediatric Association and the Canadian government. ... Second, Miss Manners went on to counsel “that even if necessary, it was neither formal nor profes- sional-looking.”’ This woman was not in a professional situation — she was in her own home with her hungry newborn. Third, Miss Manners went on to suggest that the mother could have fed the baby before her boss arriv- Drivers need manners OPEN LETTER TO M. HALE There are points which are revealed in your letter to the editor of Nov. 17 which indicate that it would be better for everyone if you do ‘“‘take the train next time,’’ rather than driving Highway 99. You state, “Surely young drivers need manners and common sense as well as skill.’’ Your observation is incomplete. AJ! drivers, in- cluding you, need manners and common sense. You state, “‘If there had been a pullout to let them by, | gladly would have.”” You should realize that there is not one yard of the highway where you cannot pull over when you are travelling through the Cheakamus Canyon .. in fact, there are only very few places on the entire length of the Sea to Sky Highway where you cannot pull over. When you see ‘‘a string of drivers’’ behind you, pull over and slow down. You can do that any time, anywhere, and for any number of cars — including one. For your own safety and the safety of others, please try it. Hopefully it will prevent some im- patient person behind you from Go with God Dear Editor: Regarding your Nov. 19 headline German-Canadians glad to say Auf Wiedersehen to the Berlin Wall. I don’t think they mean to say ‘“*Auf Wiedersehen,’’ meaning **See you again.”” They would rather say: ‘‘Gehe mit Gott, aber gehe,’’ meaning **Go with God, but go.”’ Annelies Penz West Vancouver Mailbox policy WHEN SENDING a letter to the editor, be sure to include your name, written legibly, your full address and your (telephone oumber. It seems Miss Manners knows little about babies or she would have known they don’t know how to tell time — they just cry when they’re hungry. I recently returned from a five- day forum on infant nutrition in the Philippines. There were 340 delegates from 67 countries, most- ly doctors, nurses and nutri- tionists. Many countries had displays. We included Miss Manners’ col- umn on Canada’s display. A third world pediatrician shook his head after reading it and said, ‘‘In my country babies die if they’re not breastfed.’? He went on to say, “‘! thought there were no problems in Canada, but I sce you have a big problem — it’s an attitude prob- lem.” Roses to the woman who fed her infant in front of her boss and to the two women who feed their babies on Saturday mornings at the West Vancouver Aquatic Cen- tre and to all the other women who are doing what is natural and best. Renec Hefti West Vancouver taking a risk (to themselves and others) to get by you. Maybe then you will feel less threatened by ‘“‘diabolical’’ cars driven by young ‘‘harassers, possibly high on drugs or drink,” and maybe you will find you are no longer a part of unsafe inci- dents where you are ‘‘stupidly” passed, and subject to ‘‘rude honks and obscene gestures.” Tony Simon Whistler BDI 1515 Pemberton Ave, CLOSING-OUT SALE HES TS ED EN CO ED EE Serving the North Shore for 18 years. » 9198 Men’s, Women’s, Children’s Clothing Goods Running shoes and much more.
