14 — Wednesday, May 3, 1989 - North Shore News Bue, Sentinel athlete to join T-birds WEST VANCOUVER’S Derek Christiansen has signed with the University of B.C. Thunderbirds basketball team. The 6'6” 220-pounder centre from Sentinel high school netted 45 points against Vancouver College in the first round at the B.C. high school boys’ ‘‘AAA”’ tournament in March. Christiansen said he expects to be used as a forward in the post position. He said he chose UBC after weighing other offers from Simon Fraser University, the University of Victoria and Northern Idaho College. Track and field preliminaries set THE FOUR-day North Shore high school track and field preliminaries are scheduled for May 8 to 11 at Handsworth School from 3:45 to 7 p.m. The preliminaries qualify athletes for 95 events at the 29th an- nual North Shore track meet May 18 at Swangard. Some 28 other discus, javelin and long distance events are finalized during the preliminaries. Flicka won first place in both the women’s Provincial B and Divisional A categories for a total of 98.050. Theresa Carroll of Flicka finish- ed first in Provincial B, receiving top marks in vault, bars, beam and floor for a total of 33.250. Anna Marandi, also of Flicka placed third in the same category with 33.000. In Divisional A, Melenic Redlich of Flicka finished first with a total of 33.80.
