THE RED hot North Shore Winter Club Flames extended their first place lead in the West Coast Junior Hockey League standings to 10 points and stretched their undefeated string to nine straight games recently. The North Shore squad humbled the Burnaby Bluehawks 9-4 Nov. 5, followed up with a 13-4 thump- ing of White Rock Nov. 7, then travelled to Seattle Nov. 7 to turn back the second-place Americans 6-1. Apart from a great team effort by the Flames, the wins repre- sented a formidable scoring achievement for scorer Ken Savage as he connected with a hat trick in each of the three games. In a rough, tough game Nov. 5 in Burnaby, penalties played an important part in the win as the Flames converted on six power play opportunities in their 9-4 vic- tory. After jumping into a 2-0 lead eight minutes into the game on goals by Kelly Lawrence and Justin George, the Flames were victimiz- ed by two Burnaby power play goals and then another Burnaby marker with only eight seconds remaining to trail 3-2 at the end of one. But in the next two periods it was downhill the rest of the way for Burnaby. As the Biuehawks players filled the penalty bench, the Flames obliged by filling the Burnaby net with seven goals — six of them on the power play. Burnaby countered the on- slaught with only 4 single goal midway through the second period. Leading players for the Flames were Savage with a hat trick and three assists, followed by George with a goal and three assists. Other scorers for the Flames were Dave Port with a pair and Dan Payne and Jeff Lee with singles. The Fames outshot the Bluehawks 35-25 with Gary Knight in goal for the North Shore team.
