FOR THE: ‘second: time this year, 30 “‘union- represented employees and as many as 100 fee-for- service workers at North Shore Neighborhood House have been left empty-handed on pay day. Employees were told Thursday that their cheques for the latest two-week pay period could be delayed for as long as eight days. Workers represented by SORWUC — The Service, Office and Retail Workers Union of Canada — respond- ed by setting up an informa- tion picket line at the Neighborhood House for three hours Thursday night. According to employces, their cheques have been delayed because the laying- off of provincial government employees ‘in Victoria has lengthened the time it takes to process monthly grants made to the Neighborhood House. They also say that because the Neighborhood House is operating at the upper limit of its bank overdraft, pay cheques can’t be written until the government funding is received. Georgina Coustalin, Neighborhood House board of directors president, con- firms that, saying the pro- blem is compounded because cvery sccond pay period ts *‘out of synch’’ with the arrival of provincial ouse government daycgre subsidy moncy and payment from such organizations as the United Way. The large deficit the Neighborhood House is run- ning makes it impossible for the pay cheques to be written until the grant money is in hand. The United Way has said it will forward grant moncy earlicr, says Coustalin, but the agency has no control over when it will receive moncy from the province. Coustalin is attempting to solve the Pprobicms through meetings with MLAs Jack Davis and Angus Ree and through approaches to ser- vice clubs, foundations and North Vancouver City in See page A4 11-year-old fire victim succumbs to injuries A 71-YEAR-OLD North Vancouyer man died in Vancouver General Hospital carly Friday slightly more than a month after he was severely burned in a house fire here.
