Simple tips can prevent a tragedy

FIRE CHIEF R.J. Hallaway and the members of
the North Vancouver City Fire Department have
some last minute fire safety tips to make your
Christmas merry and your New Year happy.

‘*Let’s make it a fire safety
festive season by remember-
ing some safety rules,’’ says
Hallaway.

The tips are:

* Don’t leave children un-
attended, accidents can hap-
pen at Christmas time. Don’t
buy highly combustible toys,
or ones using flammable h-
quids. Electrical toys must be
labelled for safety by CSA

(Canadian Standards
Association).

* Don’t buy trees with
shedding leaves; cut off the
tree one inch from the bot-
tom and keep immersed in
water. Keep tree away from
heat sources, and do not
block escape routes.

* Christmas tree lhghting
sets must be CSA approved
and worn sets must be replac-
