The site will be one of 12 investigated by the Ministry of the Environ- ment. All are located in the Southern Interior in the area bounded by Mer- Tritt, Cache Creek, Ashcroft and Spences Bridge. The government efforts to establish a dump for in- dustrial and hazardous _waste has been going on for at least five years, pro- mpted by a string of in- cidents that have seen in- dustrial waste, with the possibility of creating ex- tensive environmental damage, throughout the province. Hazardous wastes have been found in_ landfill sites, unused quarries and other areas. Jobless rate up in B.C. in August VANCOUVER - Both the country and B.C.’s largest city recorded decreases in the unemployment rate in August, but B.C.’s over- all rate continues to climb. Figures released Friday show that 1,365,000 Canadians are out of work, or 11.8 per cent of the work force. That's the lowest rate since September of last year. And while Vancouver shows an unemployment rate of 12.4 per cent, the provincial total has risen from 13.7 per cent in July Austin joins ranks to 14.1 per cent last month. There were 44,000 fewer people out of work in August than in July on’ the national scene but that doesn’t mean that many more people have found work. I invited a bunch of friends over to celebrate the discovery of a solar system around the star Vega. One scientist called the discovery of the Vegan solar system ‘‘the most exciting development in astronomy since the discovery of black holes in 197}."" But, really, the Vegan Connection is much more significant than that. 1 would rate it as the most important beakthrough since the discovery by Galileo of worlds other than our own, and the subsequent gradual realization that we live on one of a small cluster of planets orbiting the star Sol, which we so quaintly call the sun. ft wasn’t until this century that the idea of other ‘‘sun- like’’ stars, unimaginably dis- tant, stretching away into in- finity all around us, penetrated the mass mind of humanity, at least in the in- dustrialized nations - and even then, rather sketchily. But unul the moment the Infrared astronomy Satellite hovering 550 miles above Earth beamed its” report about Vega down a couple of weeks ago, there was no pro- of at all that other planets ex- isted outside our system. The strongest speculation had focused for many years on Barnard’s Star, which has a small companion that takes 24 years to orbit the star itself. By calculating the gravitational effect of the companion on the parent Star, scientists concluded it was only 1.5 times larger than Jupiter Whether st 1s a planet, though, of a dwarf star, re- mains unknown Other scientists have long argued that ‘‘slow’’ | stars, meaning those whose angular momentum is not what it should be, must have planets. There are billhtons of such stars in our galaxy Again, no proof The galaxy atself, 1 remind you, 16 roughly 100,000 hight years and 25,000 light: years thick A light year, of course, is based on the speed of light some 188,000) miles per second The gap between the stars istruly awesome Phe nearest star, Arcturus, is 7,000 times as far away as Pluto, the outermost known planet in Our solar system Sprucing up the core RUNDOWN LYNN. We still do not have hard evidence that any of those fantastically distant worlds sustain any lifeforms that we could recognize. Sorry. Can’t do that any longer. ‘ 1 wasn’t sure that this was a debate that would be settled in my lifetime or not. The solar system un- covered around Vega is not particularly promising, but then neither was the coast of Newfoundland when Vikings first laid eyes upon it and that didn’t make the situation any less intriguing. What has been settled here, once and for all, are the religious and philosophical arguments to the effect that we have somehow been singl- ed out by God. The answer is: No, we haven’t. The next question can now be squarely faced: what man- ner of creatures inhabit these amazing new worlds? Yoo hoo, Vega! Anyone home?
