(lan Smith photo) B3 - Wednesday, March 3, 1982 - North Shore News the Flyers ded 3-3 Sunday at the Sutherland surprises It wasn’t a surprise to seasoned basketball fans to see Sutherland and Sentinel high schools in the North Shore-Howe Sound Senior Boys “A” Zone tournament final, but it was a surprise when Sutherland nabbed handy 96-85 win. Sutherland, which was in the basement in regular season play, was not ex- pected to upset the Spartans, who not only finished fourth on the North Shore but have ranked in the B.C. top ten throughout the season. The tournament, held Friday and Saturday, featured six teams in two sections. The Spartans beat Pemberton and Elphinstone in their section to go on to the finals, and the Sabres slashed Ts’Zil 114-49 and Howe Sound 66-64 to get to the last match. Bart Gould's tremendous playing was certainly a decisive factor in the Sabres’ victory. Gould led the championship with a Sutherland with 34 points, followed by Mike Cun- ningham with 18, Andy Baker with 15 and Chris Waugh with 13. Also up in the double figure scoring ranks were Sentinel’s Mike Young with 21, Kevin Colbow with 17, Vince Doug with 13, Dave Cook with 12 and Axel Christiansen with 11. Sutherland now heads off to the B.C. “A” Cham- pionship, to be played March 10 to 13 in Langley. “A” schools are those which have less than 200 students in grades 11 and 12 for each sex. West Van- couver High School, although it qualifies for “A” status, is the only senior boys basketball team which has chosen to play in the “AA” league, for schools with more than 200. The fourth place berth was decided Friday, when Handsworth trounced Carter third best ROB CARTER of North Vancouver placed third overall among juniors at the BC.
