And I say, God bless the young Crist says Dear Editor: There’s no denying that debat< in North Vancouver District council is sometimes bitter, angry, acrimonious and even petty and personal. More often than not in these ‘verbal. sparring matches Aldermen Powell, Lakes, Rose and Ball sit in one corner, while Ernie Crist sits in the other. The mayor, who should be an impartial ‘yeferee, guiding Council to do its work expeditiously, tends to go with the majority. This line-up of con- testants, though rather one- sided, isn’t new. It's ‘been that way ever since I've been on council. I. don’t mind because I’m good section of the public supports, the stand’ I have taken onrissues. The problem really isn't one of personalities. Don't be misled by the bickering and squabbling that takes place often on minor issues. Behind and underneath what often appears to be petty politics is a struggle over policy. It's been my policy to raise issues, real issues of concern to our citizens, such as rapid ‘transit, housing, taxation, community planning; tenant rights, hazardous’ wastes, amalgamation, our relations with the Greater Vancouver vale’ cole TE _réfers to as the “flim flam ar- . tists”. And on lovely sunny days why do hunters take their guns instead of a camera? I believe Mr. Hunter, to be an excellent example of ..what a Canadian should be — intelligently frank and not © ashamed to be compas- sionate on subjects which are not always popular, and his reasoning is often above the norm. He has given me many a smile and a good laugh by some of ‘his hilariously funny remarks which proves him to be of a very balanced nature. I look forward eagerly to his col- umn. Gaile V. They have no policy to deal with them. They like to sweep con- troversial issues under the rug. I don’t agree and I've lifted the rug on a few oc- casions to expose what's underneath. My motions in council and my _ public statements outside of council have caused them some embarrassment and have aroused their ire. The result has been some furious attacks on me in council. They're tried to muzzle me by limiting my ‘right to criticize council in the press. They've tried to intimidate me with attacks and accusations. I want to make Position quite clear. I will not stop raising issues I consider of importance and concern to North Vancouver District citizens and I won't stop making any public Statements I consider necessary.
