Marilyn Sutherland. President, welcomed the members and guests and thanked all the volunteers who had contributed their services during the past year, the first as a society but the fourth year of operation since the centre opened in 1976. Mayor Jack Loucks of the City of North Vancouver spoke of the importance of volunteers to community life Mayor Derrick Humphreys of West Van- couver also brought grectings. Raye Malakoff, Treasurer, presented the financial report. Margaret Ramsay, Director, spoke briefly of the year’s special Youth Involvement project and the recent workshop “Bridging the Gap — the Integration of Special Groups through’ volun. tecring”. Ann Barber moderated the program, chosen because of the current concern among North Shore citizens in finding ways to help the many new refugee and immigrant families now living here. Helen Cunningham of Vancouver Community College gave a_ slide-tape presentation of the new “Home Front Learning” program in which trained volunteers help newcomers learn English in their homes. Beverly Nann, Director of the Immigrant Resources Project in East Vancouver, told of the settlement problems of new immigrants and how the project gives special voluntcer help to mothers and pre-schoolers to learn English and adjust to Canadian life.
