TORONTO (UPC) - Ontario
Treasurer Frank Miller an-
nounced Thursday the sales
tax will be abolished in
February for most 1979
model cars to help clear
large inventories and protect
the jobs of the province's
100,000 autoworkers.

Anyone purchasing a new
1979 car or light truck will be
eligible for a provincial sales
tax rebate of up to $700,
Miller said. The government
scheme was expected to cost
_ amaximum of $15 million.

“We had a similar rebate
scheme operating for six
months in 1975,” said
Revenue Minister Lorne
Maeck. “That program im-
pacted positively on a sagg-
ing automobile industry and
I believe that we can be
equally optimistic here.”

A revenue department of-
ficial said the rebate scheme
applied if the purchased car
or truck was new, weighed
less than 4,600 kilograms
(10,120 pounds) and was
purchased in a new car
dealer transaction.

Other regulations restrict
vehicle eligibility to
deliveries between January
31 and March 8, 1980,
“providing the vehicle pur-
chase agreement is made
prior to March 2.”

Auto industry spokesmen
appeared unsure of the

urgency of the program, but
said they welcomed any
government initiative to help
flagging car sales. The Big
Three automakers had an
estimated 20,000 units in in-
ventory.

“It looks like almost every
car in our lineup would

qualify,” a Chrysler Canada _

Spokesman said. At
Chrysler’s Canadian head-
quarters in Windsor, Ont.
spokesman Walter McCall
said there were 3,500 cars
and 1,600 trucks in its On-
tario dealers’ inventory.

“Certainly we hope this
program will clean them
up,” he said.

“Chrysler welcomes such
support and we are hopeful
that many Ontario residents
will avail themselves of this
unique opportunity to pur-
chase a new 1979 model, car
or light duty truck at
substantial savings,”
Chrysler vice president J.T.
Shuttleworth said.

quarters of Ford Motor

Company of Canada, Ken-
neth Harrigan, vice presi-
dent and general manager of
sales, said it was a positive
government move.

“Any action at this time to
stimulate sales is a good
one,” he said. “February is a
traditionally slow period and
such an incentive will cer-
tainly renew sales activity.”

Ford spokesman Doug
Mepham said there were
about 7,000 cars and light
trucks in inventories at
Ford's Ontario dealerships.

General Motors estimated
it had 8,000 unsold 1979
units.
