What a weekend | _ Dominating World Freestylers The “Quebec Air Force” swept through North Vancouver on the weekend and took off with the top three positions in the men’s aerial competition, the ‘most spectacular of the three. freestyle skiing events at the World Cup~ championship on Grouse Mountain. -_ For one of the “Force”, ‘_Jokm Eaves, 26 of Montreal, the competition at Grouse which was the final World Cup Freestyle event of the season, was where he clinched the World Cup overall points title for the third straight year. Eaves -had already cap- tured the combined title before coming to Grouse, but that did- not stop him taking second place in the _ aerial event, Sunday, behind Jean Corrivean, a 20-year- old from Quebec City. Fellow Quebecer, Pierre Poaliz, the third member of the “Air Force” took third place. The aerial event Sunday, although it was the one that drew the crowds, with a dazzling array of triple Garhammer of somersaults and back flips, was only one of three events that made up the com- petition. Friday was the moguls and Saturday was the ballet event. Both were dominated by European and American skiers. Nano Pourtler of France won the moguls, with another European, Franz West Germany, placing second. Franz's older brother Ernst Garhammer won the men’s ballet with American skiers taking every position from second to seventh. The winers of both these events were’ skiers who had specialized in that particular aspect of freestyle skiing. Stephanie Sloan of, Toronto skied her way to the overall World Cup title for women, placing second in the aerials behind Lea Hiligren of the U.S., and also taking third in the moguls. Engisch of the U.S. won the women's moguls and another American, Janene Bucher, danced her way to the women’s ballet title. Greg Athans of Kelowna, who had given Eaves stiff competition for the com- bined points title in 1977 and 1978 was unable to compete -in the aerials because of a severe shoulder injury sustained at Bromont, Quebec in February. Athazs who was still feeling the effects of the injury at Grouse managed to take third place in the moguls and ' also competed in the ballet event. . . Approximately 80 freestyle skiers competed in the events over the weekend for a total of $25,000 in prize money. A spokesman for Grouse Mountain says skiers described the location as the best on the tour, and snow conditions and weather were called “unbelievable”. . An estimated 15,500 people trekked up Grouse to watch the events on the weekend. Almost _ half turned up on Sunday to watch the aerial skiing.
