In tune with the trends. these designers are showing unstructured shapes that skim the body with de- emphasized shoulders and draped hemlines. » There is an absence of clutter, with as few details and attachments as possible, so as not to take away from the clean lines. Extra pockets, cuffs, collars, ruf- fles and bows, and even jewelry and accessories are forgotten, The inter- .Sun protection necessary even in winter months THERE IS a common miscon- ception that it is necessary to protect yourself from the sun only during the summer months. However, whether you are skiing, skating, swimming or sailing, the same “damaging and aging” rays are at work. all day long, all year round. In a recent study. on. the “Attitudes and Awareness of Sun Protection,” sponsored by Warner- Lambert Canada. only 6% of Canadians were aware that the sun’s ultraviolet rays can be as harmful in winter as in summer. In addition, 58% of those who _ participate in outdoor activities dur- ing the winter rarely wear any sun protection compared to only 14% in the summer. As a result-of these findings. dermatologists are trying to educate Canadians about the harmful impact of the sun and urge them to apply protective lotions all year round. Ultraviolet light The sun radiates three types of ultraviolet light: Ultraviolet C (UVC), Ultraviolet B (UVB) and Ultraviolet A (UVA). The most harmful. UVC rays, are very short and are completely filtered out by the carth’s ozone layer. UVA and UVB on the other hand, are not to be taken lightly. _ Associated with sun burning and permanent sun damage, UVB rays are strongest daily between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. UVA’ the longest rays. are con- stant all day and all year long.
