Make regular monthly checks of smoke alarms

seconds, gently blowing smoke in-
to. the chamber. Then blow out
the candle and let the smoke rise
into the alarm. As soon as the
alarm sounds, fan the smcXe away
with a newspaper or magazine.

Accumulated dust should be
vacuumed out of the alarm at
least twice a year.

If your smoke alarm is bat-
tery-operated, change the batteries
at least once a year. Most alarms
make a chirping sound when the
battery gets low, but don’t wait
