Tunya Audain Marijuana Party Place of residence: West Vancouver Age: 63 Occupation: Bookstore clerk Family: Divorced. Two daughters, two grandsons. Quality and accessibility of health-care services: “Stop the hypocrisy about a two- tier system. Health should not be restricted to a govern- ment monopoly with lang waiting lists and unnecessary deaths. Deregulate so that Medicare dollars can be freed up (for everyone who needs access.) Of course, stopping the prohibition of marijuana makes it legally available for valuable med- ical uses without covert, criminal behaviour.” Protecting the environment: “The fact that hemp is pro- hibited from cultivation in Canada causes untold envi- ronmental harm and degra- dation. Hemp is a great source for papermaking: it grows in one year versus 20- 40 for forests, does not require toxic chemicals and bleaches for paper produc- tion, and of course is renew- able (does not deprive us of old growth forests or spotted owls).” Tax reduction: “Remove - income taxes, federally. A minimal government would not require much money. Money for essential govern- ment services such as defence, police and courts can be collected voluntarily, through lotteries and user- pay systems as GST.” Representing B.C. interests in Ottawa: “Once marijuana is decriminalized Canada- wide, examine other coun- terproductive and meaning- less faws and regulations that * should be scrapped; and “entrench property rights in Canada.” Rusty Corben Independent Place of residence: North Vancouver Ape: 29 Occupation: Teacher at Keith Lynn Alternate secondary school in Nonh Van Family: Single. No children. Quality and accessibility of heafih-care services: “I think the huge budget surplus we now have should be partly used for health care. The Liberals claim that they will restore health-care funding to 1993 or 1995 levels, but I. think it should be raised beyond that. We need io look at ways of making it more efficient, to reform it, without two-tiered health _ care. | would ensure that Canadian health care is always universal.” Protecting the environment: “The environment is very important. Although | have always had a car, | don’t mind paying high gas taxes or environmental taxes. There need to be incentives for us to protect the environ- ment. Penalties for harming the environment on the part of industry need to be much higher.” Tax reduction: “I support a fair tax system, not an unfair flat tax. There should be dif- ferent taxation levels, although the first $10,000 of income should be tax-free. Also, the top tax level should not kick in until perhaps $100,000. Business and cap- ital gains taxes should also be lowered.” Representing 8.C. interests in Ottawa: “B.C. does not have much power in Ottawa. Few backbenchers or junior cabinet ministers, for that matter, have much power. The Prime Minister's Office has become too pow- erful. ! support more free - votes in the Commons.” “Crist abjects to use of heritage funds for work From page 4 ~+ William Griffin park, then kids will have a field to use much sooner.” The district wiil begin the public process over the next few weeks. They will advertise in "the local. papers and. hold an open house to measure public reaction, This information will ~ then be. taken’ to the Minister of Municipal ’ Affairs for approval. - : Harris said’ the artificial turf ‘field is an - important project. She suggested council look - into a back-up plan — such as borrowing money. from the heritage fund — in case the public or the Ministry of Municipal Affairs does not support them borrowing from the “Inter River Park project. ; Mayor Don Bell-was concerned that if the , district borrowed money from Inter River Park project, then that project would be slowed down. He suggested that council draw, not borrow, funds out of the heritage fund. “These sports are growing in our community — espe- cially girl’s soccer,” he said. “I think the issue is important enough to warrant us using money in the heritage fund, which can be replenished by future land sales.” — Crist strongly objected to the mayor's rec- ommendation. “The heritage funds are not Meant to be used and not paid back,” he said. Denault brought forth a new motion. to look into the feasibitity of a private/public partnership for the project. . Muri said building a field is not something that is done for profit but rather to provide a service. “It’s nor a big money-maker so why would the private sector even want fo get involved?” she questioned. Michael Hill MarxistLeninist Place of residence: Vancouver Age: 51 Occupation: Warehouseman and forklift operator Family: Single. Quality and accessibility of health-care services: “Public utility and essential right of all to this service. This issue as well as environmental protection should be a top priority that must involve the meaningful input of all, especially those involved in the front lines (health-care providers, etc.j” Pratecting the environment: See above comments.
