DND joins
bicycle
program

THE Department of
National Defence wili be
participating in the
Canadian Automobile
Association’s nationwide
“Watch for Bikes” cam-
paign.
“Each ycar in Canada, as
many as 70 cyclists die and
more than 10,000 more are
injured in traffic collisions,”
says CAA president Brian
Hunt in a release.

Started in 1998, CAA’s
Watch for Bikes is an effective
campaign which was prompt-
ed by a 1997 cyclist fatality as
a result of a car door opening
into traffic. To help ‘prevent
such tragedies, CAA designed
a transparent safety decal
imprinted with the “Watch
for Bikes” slogan. Motorists
apply the decal to the bottom
of their driver's side mirror.

The DND has distributed
20,000 decals to 26 of their
bases to outfit their commer-
cial vehicle fleet with the
decals. The decals are avail-
able free of charge at partici-
pating CAA offices.
