38 ~ Friday, September 19, 1997 -- North Shore News Weekend of racing at Mission track AFTER standing on the sidelines at the recent Molson Indy Vancouver, local racers are anxious to get back on the track this week- end as the Sperts Car Club of B.C. (SCCBC) hosts the final Canadian round of the International Conference Championship. Over 120 teams from across the Pacific. Northwest are expecied to attend the weekend event at Mission Raceway Park. This weekend marks the winding down of one of the most successful seasons in the past decade. “We have seen remarkable growth in participation and spectator levels this. year,” reports SCCBC marketing manager Marc Rovner. “After three years of rebuilding, we are finally see- ing the results we knew were attainable. Now our challenge is to maintain tight control of cost, which is sull the number one ‘limiting factor for people wanting to go racing. “Our driver-craining pro- grams have been sold out all season and the percentage of students planning to start rac- ing is very high compared with past years. This bodes well for the future.” A wide variety of cars will be competing this weekend, ranging from Hondas and Toyotas to larger Camaros and Mustangs. Purpose-built sports racers and open-wheel’. Formula Fords will also take on the two-kilometre road course. In all, six groups of race cars svill ensure that there is never more than a few min- utes break in the action dur- ._ ing the weekend. Recent improvements to the race car paddock and grandstands have been well, received by — spectators. Mission is unique for a race course in that one can see most of the track from the spectator viewing area. “Fans really like the idea that they can mingle freely with the drivers and cars in the open paddock area,” Rovner says of the course. “Tt is very much a family atmos- phere we. are tying to culti- vate.” The action gets under way tomorrow at 9 a.m. ‘with practice. and qualifying rounds.
