’“Nineteen-ninety-two
was just paddling twice-a-
week and on the weekends
we'd just go out and just try
to get the hang of it,” Rob
said: ofthe sport’s well-
known learning curve. “In
1993 we trained pretty much
every ° day and we'd train
four times a week on the
Chilliwack.”

Like many of ils lower:
profile counterparts, the
sport of whitewater slalom
racing is quite often funded
from the pockets of its par-
ticipants.

As members of the
Canadian team the
Cartwrights get a -little
money from Sport Canada,
but only a fraction of what is
needed te support a world-
class bid.

As such, the brothers rely
on the understanding and
generosity of their parents,
and the support of local
sponsors, including Burrard
Clean Operations, Cates
Tugs, Grouse Mountain, Dr.
lan Morgan, Hyak River
Rafting and Predator
Performances.

Grouse and Hyuk also
employ the brothers; Rob as
a. guide with Hyak and
Jamie as a busboy at Grouse
Mountain.
