PANITA OF Vancouver, along
with Health Canada, recently
announced the voluntary withdraw-
al from sale of the product Oiled
Nubuck Protector, used for protect-
ing footwear and leather, following
reports of respiratory problems
associated with its use.

Oil Nubuck Protector is sold in a
pump spray container under the fol-
lowing names: Panitu, Coxy,:
Simard & Voyer, Transit, Pegabo,
and Aldo.

The original Oiled Nubuck
Protector was introduced to Canada
early this year, mainly in the
province of Quebec.

This action follows the receipt
by the Quebec Poison Control
Centre of close to 20 calls froin
people reporting symptoms which
included coughing, breathing diffi-

culties, chest pains and shivers, At
least two people required hospital-
ization,

Panita and Poison Control
Centres will continue to share infor-
mation with Health Canada con-
cerning patients’ symptoms.

THE COSMETICS industry, rather
than food manufacturers, will be
the first to benefit from a new oat-
milling process developed by
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
. -The new technology separates
oats into pure plant-based compo-
nents that can be used to replace
ingredients derived from minerals
and animal byproducts in cosmetic
and skincare products.

The technology has been
licensed to a company that will use,
for example, treated oat starch to
replace talc, oat protein as a base
for shampoos and lotions and oat
bran as a thickening agent.
