legalizing mid-wifery in B.C.?

B.C. Health Minister Elizabeth Cull recently announced the provin-
cial government's intention to legalize midwifery as an autonomous

profession in B.C.

“The legalization of midwifery reinforces the right of women to

choose their caregiver and
place of birth,” said Cull.

The Midwives Association of
British Columbia (MABC) has
actively lobbied Victoria for
changes in the the Health Act
to allow trained and licensed
midwives to perform aid and
delivery of babies. Prior to
Cull’s arinmouncemnt, babies
could only be delivered under
a licensed doctor's
supervision.

The philosophical crux of the
argurrent put forth by the mid-
wives can be summed up as:
"Doctors say they deliver
babies, but really, babies

deliver themselves."

The North Shore News survey
team began calling North
Shore residents last Tuesday
to find out how you feel about
the legalization of the profes-
sion of midwifery.

INQUIRING REPORTER

The majority of those polled

(61.1%) were in agreement

with the provincial health min-

ister's decision. Those

opposed to allowing midwives

to deliver babies represented

13.7%, while a larger percentage (15.8%) said they did not know
enough about the issue to comment. The remaining 9.4% had no
opinion on the matter.

In a zone-by-zone breakdown of the North Shore, Lower Lonsdale
West residents polled were 100% in favor of supporting the profes-
sionalization of midwifery.
