Weeding
is a
hoe-hum
chore

WEEDS ARE best defined
as plants for which
humankind has never found
a use.

Some are quite attractive, such
as Mullen, which frequently grows
in poor roadside soil and has
tobacco-like leaves, a central stem
and a Jong floret of tiny yellow
blossoms. Or the purple, yeliow
and white candle-like flowers of
the nightshade, poisonous cousin
of the potato and the tomato.

The only problem with weeds in
the home garden is that they are
too vigorous, thriving through
heat and drought and robbing
cultivated plants of moisture and
nutrients.

The environmental answer is
hoe, hoe, hoe.

Watch a farmer in his market
garden. In early spring, long be-
fore.he has seeded, he is at work
in his garden with the hoe, work-
ing the soi! thoroughly two or
three times a week.

What he is doing is disturbing
the vigorously sprouting weeds,
seeds and “‘weedlings”” so that by
late spring when he is ready to
seed, there’s not a weed in sight.

But he ‘doesn’t need to stop
there.

During the growing season, in
order to take care of late-
sprouting weeds you’l! see him at
work weekly between the plant
rows. .

So it’s back to the future with
the good old garden hoe, By the
way, it may take a bit of sear-
ching since many retailers no
longer stock hoes, but keep look-
ing. The results are worth the ef-
fort.
